Ink Monstr’s Sticky Situation produced in partnership with Breckenridge Brewery has started and we couldn’t be more excited about it. 8 Colorado artists are having their art travel around the country on Breck Brew’s “Breck Trek“. You can follow them along as the hit twelve different cities throughout the year bringing music, beer and, of course, art! One of the artists featured in this show is our very own Patrick Maxcy who debuted in Sticky Situation this last October. Check out what he has to say about art, inspiration and why he loves working with Ink Monstr!
IM: Where did your love for art start? How did you become an artist?
Patrick Maxcy: I grew up in a creative household in Florida and started drawing young. I starting designing shirts at age 6. It’s something I’ve always wanted to be. I took every art class in high school and graduated college with a degree in studio fine art as well as graphic design.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Patrick Maxcy: I grew up near the ocean and now live near the mountains in Colorado. I love exploring and researching nature and unique animals. Traveling and getting outdoors is a major part of my inspiration.
If you could learn any new medium of art, what would it be and why?
Patrick Maxcy: Woodworking. I admire my friends who have the skills to build detailed furniture and homes.
How did you come up with the idea for you Breck Treck Sticky Situation Piece?
Patrick Maxcy: One of my favorite creatures is the octopus. A lot of my work deals with environmental issues. I imagine us polluting the ocean to the point where animals would climb out of the sea and look for other water sources, or in this case beer. I wanted the octopus climbing on top of the beer silo while grabbing Colorado related items. He is holding beer, a snowboard and an axe all while the Colorado state bird rest on top of him. Visually I thought it would spark imagination and a story.
What’s your favorite Breck Brew beer?
Patrick Maxcy: Nitro Vanilla Porter
What makes Ink Monstr unique from other print shops?
Patrick Maxcy: Ink Monstr chose to have their building in the lowest income area of Denver. Also an area where I have worked with the kids doing art projects. Having a business of artists so close to these kids is an inspiration toward more art in their life. They also provide positive fun events for the neighborhood.
What do you like most about working with Ink Monstr?
Patrick Maxcy: They present unique and new ideas of ways to display the work. It’s refreshing to be part of something different.
