While the 3.5 hour drive to Aspen is a long one the views are absolutely breathtaking. Driving through meadows, mountains and the oh so epic Glenwood Canyon, you really can’t complain about the extra long drive (and some podcasts on business and marketing help ease the pain as well.) Our team of three installers made the trek up to Aspen on Monday and were there for one week wrapping a total of 28 gondolas at the top of Aspen Snowmass.
A 30 minute drive from the base of the mountain up some sketchy dirt roads will get you to the tippy top of the mountain. Pulling 6 gondolas off the line at a time, our installers got down and dirty. Each installers does the same work on every gondola so that the work is consistent and that they are able to master their section without having to figure out how to wrap new parts of the gondola. This keeps things moving fast and provides the best quality.
The biggest struggles with this project came with the weather and with the lack of oxygen. What you don’t think about going into an install is making sure you have enough oxygen to be able to light your torches, but this was the exact problem we ran into being at 11,000 feet. We also had to be weary of the weather. As we installed on Wednesday we could watch the first real snowstorm of the season move over the distant mountains making it’s way to us. The steep dirt roads that take you to the top of the mountain are all closed when any snow hits. This means that you can only take the gondola at 8am and 4pm to get up and down the mountain, creating a much smaller window of time to install.
Amazingly the weather gods were on our side and only threw down 4 inches. (During any other situation or time of year this would have been a huge bummer, but in this one case we were oh so thankful!) With that said, all 28 gondolas advertising the Audi FIS World Cup Finals, were completed on time and look pretty great if you ask us! Check out the whole install in the video below and the final images of these sweet gondolas. If you hit up Aspen in the next few months to get some skiing or snowboarding in, be sure to grab a picture and tag us in it!
